...In the Meiji Period of Japan, a young girl, Kaoru, encounters the legendary Hitokiri Battousai, a ruthless swordsman with a lot of blood on his hands. She is nearly killed, but a stranger saves her. He is some wanderer who stays with her at her dojo for the time being. Later, it turns out that that guy who attacked her is an imposter. The stranger who rescued her is the true Hitokiri Battousai. However, now, he has taken the name of Kenshin Himura and plans on making up for his sins. After defeating the fake, Kaoru asks Kenshin to stay. He agrees and the two encounter many enemies, including those of Kenshin's darker past.
